The Art of the Unconventional Escape:
Why I Handcraft Only 5 Trips a Year
RAGHAV RAJ
What does it mean to travel? In the age of artificial intelligence, planning a vacation has never been easier. Anyone can sit down, type a simple prompt into an AI engine, "give me a 7-day budget itinerary for Japan," and receive a neatly structured, sterile spreadsheet in a fraction of a second.
I have tested those algorithms myself. I wanted to see if they could capture the essence of a place, the rhythm of a morning, the texture of local life. They cannot. They build templates. They direct you to the most crowded tourist hotspots, checking off generic boxes that leave you exhausted, uninspired, and disconnected from the very soul of the country you flew across the world to see.
Real curation is an act of meticulous creation. It takes months of deep reading, endless preparation, and personal ground testing. It requires understanding, while sitting thousands of miles away, exactly what a day will feel like on the ground for a client, such as how the wind blows through a specific watchtower in Georgia, or what time the sandstone cliffs of Petra turn from dust to gold before the crowds arrive.
"Nostalgia is not something you have to wait years to experience. If an itinerary is handcrafted correctly using the right mindset techniques, you will feel a profound, beautiful nostalgia for the destination by the very third day of your trip."
Beyond the Tourist Box: What Trips I Plan
I do not build generic vacations. I handcraft slow-travel curations born from my personal journeys across 20-plus countries. When I travel, I believe in surrounding myself with like-minded individuals, including friends, family, and travellers who share a vision of exploring the world authentically. I love doing that for people, and I love doing it for myself. Here is the spectrum of journeys I am interested in curating:
1. The Solo Breakthrough
Many people, especially Indian women on international borders, are taught to view solo travel as a threat. The world is not risky; it is beautiful. A true solo trip means having no strangers to rely on, but finding yourself in the process. I design robust, safety-centric solo trips that leave perfect room for organic, unplanned elements.
2. Unconventional Honeymoons
Having planned bespoke, stress-free honeymoons for close friends and senior corporate executives alike (including CBOs to destinations like the Seychelles), I know how to avoid the clichéd honeymoon packages. I design intimate, authentic escapes that focus on shared awe rather than generic luxury resorts.
3. Mindset & Travel Coaching
As a certified lifestyle and mindset coach, I view travel as the ultimate form of emotional healing and personal breakthrough. I weave coaching frameworks and mindfulness hacks into your itinerary, helping you dismantle mental blocks, gain new life perspectives, and return home deeply renewed.
4. Micro-Group Strangers Curation
I love bringing together tiny, intimate groups of like-minded strangers who share a unified vision. Travelling together to places like Spiti or Meghalaya on a shared ideation creates temporary families and permanent memories.
The Magic of the 'Third Day Nostalgia'
Most travel agencies build rigid schedules that treat you like cargo. My methodology is completely different. Because of my background as a mindset coach, I integrate specific cognitive frameworks and travel hacks into the itineraries.
We focus on what I call "Third Day Nostalgia". By combining local integration, slow pacing, sensory immersion, and strategic moments of quiet reflection, we accelerate your emotional connection to the land. You do not need to wait years to miss a place; my travellers find themselves looking at a sunset on the third evening of their trip feeling a deep, sweet nostalgia for the streets they just discovered.
A Strict Limit: Why Only 5 Trips a Year?
Because I personally research, test, and handcraft every single detail of these itineraries, I cannot and will not work in bulk. I am only one person. I travel extensively myself, refining my techniques, learning from every border crossed, and ensuring my knowledge is fresh and real.
To protect this standard of absolute authenticity, I limit my curations to a maximum of 5 bespoke trips per year.
This constraint ensures that when you work with me, you are not receiving a template from a junior clerk or an automated AI generation. You are receiving months of my own life, mapped unconventionally, poured directly into yours.
"Budget is never the barrier. You can travel anywhere in the world with just a lakh in your pocket. I once met a friend from Belgium on a trail who had traveled to 75 different countries without ever taking a single flight. It is not about the money; it is about the vision, the reading, and the willingness to explore."
The Launch: A Dream Set in Motion
This website, Bucket Hat Traveller, is the realization of a long-held dream. After pouring massive amounts of heart and energy into my YouTube channel (which recently crossed a hard-earned milestone of 1,000 subscribers!), I wanted a dedicated digital home for travellers who think like us.
We officially launched this platform on Sunday, May 31, at 5:00 PM, surrounded by warmth and celebration at the Ranthambore Vinay in JP Nagar 5th Phase, Bengaluru. It was a beautiful Sunday evening, and it marks the beginning of an extraordinary chapter.
If you are ready to bypass generic commercial tourism, step beyond the spreadsheet, and heal through the soil of new worlds, I welcome you as my guest. Let us map something unforgettable.
